چکیده

We have compiled a new sample of 240 halo objects with accurate distance and radial velocity measurements, including globular clusters, satellite galaxies, field blue horizontal branch stars and red giant stars from the Spaghetti survey. The new data lead to a significant increase in the number of known objects for Galactocentric radii beyond 50 kpc, which allows a reliable determination of the radial velocity dispersion profile out to very large distances. The radial velocity dispersion shows an almost constant value of 120 km s out to 30 kpc and then continuously declines down to 50 km s at about 120 kpc. This fall-off puts important constraints on the density profile and total mass of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way. For a constant velocity anisotropy, the isothermal profile is ruled out, while both a dark halo following a truncated flat model of mass 1.2 −0.5 × 10 12 M⊙ and an NFW profile of mass 0.8 −0.2 × 10 12 M⊙ and c =18 are consistent with the data. The significant increase in the number of tracers combined with the large extent of the region probed by these has allowed a more precise determination of the Milky Way mass in comparison to previous works. We also show how different assumptions for the velocity anisotropy affect the performance of the mass models.

Galactic halo models and particle dark-matter detection

Rates for detection of weakly interacting massive-particle ~WIMP! dark matter are usually carried out assuming the Milky Way halo is an isothermal sphere. However, it is possible that our halo is not precisely spherical; it may have some bulk rotation; and the radial profile may differ from that of an isothermal sphere. In this paper, we calculate detection rates in observationally consistent a...

Palomar 13: an Unusual Stellar System in the Galactic Halo

We report the first results of a program to study the internal kinematics of globular clusters in the outer halo of the Milky Way. Using the Keck telescope and High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer, we have measured precise radial velocities for 30 candidate red giants in the direction of Palomar 13, an object traditionally cataloged as a compact, low-luminosity globular cluster. We have combine...

The mass profile of the Milky Way to the virial radius from the Illustris simulation

We use particle data from the Illustris simulation, combined with individual kinematic constraints on the mass of the Milky Way (MW) at specific distances from the Galactic Centre, to infer the radial distribution of the MW’s dark matter halo mass. Our method allows us to convert any constraint on the mass of the MWwithin a fixed distance to a full circular velocity profile to the MW’s virial r...

The edge - on spiral gravitational lens B 1600 + 434

We present new observations of the gravitational lens (GL) system B1600+434, strongly suggesting that the lens is an edge-on spiral galaxy. These observations are used to constrain the mass model of the system, in particular the oblateness and velocity dispersion of the dark matter halo around the lensing galaxy. From an analytical model we find a lower limit on the halo oblate-ness q halo = (c...

Density Fluctuations in the Galactic Halo and Experimental Searches for Dark Matter

The interpretation of the results of experiments designed to search for elementary particle dark matter in the Milky Way halo relies on specific suppositions concerning the local mass density and velocity distribution of the unseen particles. Predicted detection rates have all been computed under the assumptions that the halo density profile is smooth, and the velocity distribution is at least ...
